Fore!
Charles E. Van Loan was one of the most popular American sportswriters and short-story writers of the early twentieth century, and Fore! is his collection of golf stories, set in the locker rooms and on the fairways of American country clubs.
Where Wodehouse is elegant, Van Loan is brash, slangy and quick, with an ear for the way golfers actually talk to each other. The first story, “Gentlemen, You Can’t Go Through!,” takes on the eternal enemy of every club golfer: the slow foursome in front. Later stories take in a handicap cup nobody can win, a cure for lumbago, and the peculiar psychology of the man who decides to quit.
